BuildHers UK · Training & Careers
Whether you want to build a career as a professional handywoman, pick up practical skills for your own home, or join our network of qualified tradeswomen - BuildHers has a pathway for you.
We're building the training offer now. Register your interest below and you'll be among the first to know when courses open.
A short, practical course for women who want to handle the basics themselves. No career ambitions required - just the satisfaction of knowing how to fix things properly.
A career-change course for women who want to turn practical skills into a real income. This isn't just training - it's a full pathway into a profession, with the confidence to go with it.
For qualified tradeswomen who know their craft but want to show up more powerfully - with clients, in business, and in themselves. Because knowing how to do the job and feeling like you belong in the room are two different things.
Most trade training teaches you how to do the job. BuildHers training teaches you how to be the person who does it well - and believes they can.
For women entering a traditionally male industry, confidence isn't a soft extra. It's the difference between staying in the room and walking back out. We build it in from the start.
Every course includes dedicated work on professional self-belief - how to present yourself, handle difficult situations and own your expertise without apology.
Our trainers are practising BuildHers tradeswomen. They've navigated the same hurdles. That lived experience is part of what you learn from.
You join a network of women at the same stage - and one that grows with you. Peer support, shared learning and a group who actually gets it.
Lone working, difficult clients, personal safety on the job - we cover this properly, because it matters and most courses don't.
If you're a qualified tradeswoman - plumber, electrician, carpenter or other - and you want to work under the BuildHers brand, we want to hear from you.
This isn't just work. It's a network that has your back. Safety, support, community, and a brand that's building something worth being part of.
Whether it's training or joining the network - let us know and we'll be in touch with next steps as soon as they're available.
BuildHers UK · Our Story
The demand is real. The gap is wide. And we're here to close it - one skilled woman at a time.
There has always been a quiet but very real demand for female tradespeople in UK homes. For some homeowners - particularly women living alone, elderly residents, or those in vulnerable situations - having a woman arrive to do the work simply feels more comfortable. There is no judgement in that. It is a practical, human preference, and it is entirely reasonable.
But it goes beyond comfort. Research published in 2025 found that 96% of homeowners are open to hiring a tradeswoman, and online searches for female tradespeople have surged by 450% in recent years. Clients consistently report that they value the level of care, communication, and finish that BuildHers women bring to every job. That is not a coincidence - it is a standard we hold ourselves to deliberately.
BuildHers was built to meet that demand properly. Not as a novelty, not as a token gesture toward diversity - but as a genuinely excellent trades service that happens to be entirely female. We believe the two things go hand in hand: hire the right women, hold the right standards, and the results speak for themselves.
The UK trades sector is facing a structural crisis. The CITB's latest Construction Workforce Outlook report estimates that the industry needs 293,300 additional workers over the next five years - around 47,860 per year. By 2032, the shortfall could reach close to one million. Over a third of the current trades workforce is already aged over 50, while just 8% are under 25. The pipeline is not delivering.
The government has acknowledged the problem. The Get Britain Working White Paper (November 2024) committed to creating thousands of new construction jobs, and a March 2025 government plan aimed to recruit and train up to 60,000 specialist construction workers by 2029. In tandem, diversity and inclusion incentives are increasingly shaping procurement and contracting decisions - particularly in the public and social housing sectors, where social value scoring now rewards suppliers who actively employ and train underrepresented groups.
Despite all of this, women still represent just 2% of skilled tradespeople and around 0.9% of housebuilders in the UK. The Chartered Institute of Building has called this figure "quite shocking." We agree. It is also, frankly, an enormous opportunity - and one that BuildHers is positioned to address directly.
"Only 2% of UK tradespeople are women. That is not a pipeline problem - it is an opportunity. BuildHers exists to close that gap."
BuildHers UK · 2025
Trades have historically been male-dominated spaces - in culture, in training environments, and in expectation. For most of the last century, a woman picking up a tool professionally was an exception rather than a norm. That is changing, and changing fast. Female apprenticeships in construction and engineering have risen by 366% over the past five years. Nearly one in five women (19%) has now considered retraining as a skilled tradesperson, rising to 34% among those aged 18-34.
Part of this shift is being driven by a growing awareness of what trades can offer: flexibility, genuine earning potential, and something AI simply cannot replicate. A skilled woman who can fix, build, wire, and maintain has a capability that no algorithm will displace. In an economy increasingly anxious about automation, a hands-on skill set offers a level of security that many desk-based careers cannot. Skilled tradespeople in the UK are now earning a median of £45,400 - and self-employed tradeswomen with strong reputations regularly exceed this.
BuildHers exists precisely to support this transition. Whether someone is switching careers entirely or learning basics for the first time, we provide a structured, confidence-led pathway into the profession - and a brand they can be proud to work under.
Research by Rated People found that 1 in 3 tradeswomen has experienced gender discrimination on the job. Lone working, being dismissed by clients, and operating in environments built entirely around male norms - these are not abstract concerns. They are the daily reality for many women in the industry, and they are one of the primary reasons women leave.
BuildHers is structured to address this from the outset. Every woman in our network operates under a brand with a clear code of conduct, a defined safety framework for lone working, and a peer community of women who understand the environment. She is not navigating it alone.
Our training goes beyond technical skills. Confidence is a core module - not as a soft add-on, but as a professional necessity. We know from experience that the gap between knowing how to do a job and feeling authorised to do it is where most women get stuck. We close that gap deliberately, and we support our tradeswomen through the career, not just the course.
Whether you need a BuildHers tradesperson, want to train with us, or are a business looking for a trusted female trades partner - we'd love to hear from you.
The trades industry has never been built with women in mind. Long before you pick up a tool, there are barriers - feeling out of place, working alone, not knowing who to call if something goes wrong. Most companies ignore all of that. We built BuildHers around it.
Every woman who joins our team gets more than work. She gets a framework that keeps her safe, a community that understands her, and a brand that's actively invested in helping her grow - professionally and personally.
This is what makes BuildHers different. Not just that we're female - but that we genuinely look after our own.
"We built the business we would have wanted to work for. One where your safety isn't an afterthought and your confidence is considered part of the job."
